We all hear how CARBS are bad for you that they make you fat, but we all need CARBS, especially now with the economy in such a poor condition. CARBS are a vital part of any diet and play a vital role in marketing yourself to a prospective new employer. CARBS are how you create value in yourself and in the eyes of others, namely your current employer. If you are currently in between jobs then you can share your CARBS with people you meet when networking and ultimately in the the interview.

What kind of CARBS will help? You need the good kind of CARBS, not pasta, potatoes or chips etc.

CARBS are the stories that illustrate the value you bring to an organization.

CARBS is an acronym I use when answering questions and even my resume has a few CARBS in it. So here it is:

Challenge – What is the challenge to overcome?

Action – What is the action you took to overcome the challenge?

Result – What were the results of your actions?

Benefit – What was the benefit of your actions and results? Benefits are different from results. Think what added benefits were achieved from your results.

So for those who are looking for ways to demonstrate your value to your organization or next; remember your CARBS. Try to write down about 20 of these and you may be pleasently surprised by how much value you bring.

Hope this helps.
